Ground level
An exterior entry is the first surface anyone walks on and the last one anybody thinks about. It sits outside, at ground level, and it takes weather, foot traffic and sun without any of the protection an interior floor gets.
That changes what the job is. Before any pattern goes down, the ground plane has to be prepared to carry it, and the layout has to be set so the route across the entry reads as one continuous surface instead of a patch.

The base came first
Outside, the base is the whole argument.
An interior slab has a roof over it. An exterior ground plane does not, so everything left behind in the base gets tested by the first heavy rain. Water has to leave the surface, which means the plane needs to fall away from the building rather than sit flat, and any low spot accepted during preparation becomes a puddle that stays there.
The second thing the base decides is whether the pattern holds its line. A modular surface is only as straight as what it sits on. If the ground moves under one unit, that unit tells on itself immediately, because the joint beside it opens and the eye goes straight to it. Preparation is what keeps that from happening in the first year.
Base preparation
The exposed entry base is documented while the site is being prepared. This is the state that decides everything laid on top of it: how the plane falls, where it sits high, and whether the route across the entry will run true.

Visible geometry
On an exterior entry, layout is the design. There is no furniture to break up the plane and no walls to hide a bad start, so the geometry of the surface is the only thing carrying the space.
Two choices do the work. The first is where the pattern starts, because the starting line sets every joint that follows and the eye reads the whole route back to it. The second is how the pattern meets the edges, since an entry is bounded on all sides and a cut that lands badly at the threshold is the detail people see every time they arrive.
